The ideal window

For most of the UK, the best time to paint a house exterior is from late April to late September. Days are longer, temperatures are usually above the minimum for exterior paints, and the weather is more settled. Late spring and early autumn are often ideal – warm enough, but not so hot that paint dries too fast.

In Scotland and northern England, the reliable window may be a little shorter. In mild coastal areas of the South West, painters sometimes work into October.

What painters look for

Exterior paint needs the right conditions both during application and while it dries. Most manufacturers specify minimum temperatures, typically around 5–10°C for air and surface. Painters will also look at:

  • A dry wall – render and brick can stay damp for days after heavy rain
  • No rain forecast for several hours after painting
  • No frost overnight while the paint cures
  • Not too hot – very high temperatures and direct sun cause paint to dry too fast
  • Low wind, especially if spraying
  • Enough daylight to finish sections before evening dew

Why painting in poor weather fails

Paint applied to a damp wall can blister and peel. Paint that gets rained on before it cures can wash off or streak. Paint applied in freezing conditions may not form a proper film. Even if it looks fine at first, it may fail early – which is why good painters stop work when conditions aren't right, even if it delays the job.

Book early

Good exterior painters book up quickly once spring arrives. If you want your house painted in May or June, start getting quotes in January or February. If you can be flexible, early autumn can be a good time to find availability, and the weather in September is often excellent.

What about winter?

Winter is generally a poor time for exterior painting, but there are exceptions – small jobs such as a front door, done on a dry, mild day, or emergency repairs. Many painters switch to interior work in winter, which can be a good time to book your interior decorating.

Common questions

What is the best month to paint a house exterior in the UK?

May, June and September are often ideal – warm, dry and settled, without extreme heat.

What temperature is too cold for exterior painting?

Most exterior paints need air and surface temperatures above about 5–10°C. Check the manufacturer's guidance.

Can you paint the outside of a house in winter?

Generally not recommended, apart from small jobs on dry, mild days.

How long does exterior paint need before rain?

Usually several hours at least, but check the product. Many painters want a dry day ahead.

Is it bad to paint in direct sunlight?

Strong sun can make paint dry too fast, leading to lap marks and poor adhesion. Painters usually avoid it.
