Where to find decorators

Recommendations from friends and neighbours are still the best starting point. Online quote services can also connect you with local decorators who are available, and review sites help you see what previous customers think. Look for decorators who have worked on similar properties.

What to check

Before you book, check:

  • Reviews and photos of recent work
  • Public liability insurance
  • Membership of a trade body (optional but helpful)
  • A clear, written quote
  • Availability and timescales
  • Payment terms

Getting quotes

Get two or three quotes for the same job. Make sure each decorator is quoting for the same thing – the same surfaces, number of coats, preparation and paint. A good quote will list:

  • Which rooms and surfaces are included
  • Preparation work
  • Number of coats
  • Paint brand and range
  • Timescale
  • Total price and whether VAT is included

Rather leave it to a professional?

Red flags

Be cautious if a decorator:

  • Asks for full payment upfront
  • Won't provide a written quote
  • Gives a price without seeing the job
  • Can't provide references or photos
  • Pressures you to decide quickly
  • Quotes much lower than everyone else without explanation

Comparing on more than price

The cheapest quote isn't always the best value. A higher price may include better preparation, better paint, or an extra coat. Communication matters too – a decorator who answers your questions clearly and turns up when promised is likely to do a good job.

Agreeing the job

Once you've chosen, confirm everything in writing – even an email is fine. Agree start dates, working hours, payment stages and what happens if extra work is needed. When the job is finished, walk round with the decorator before paying the final balance.

Common questions

How do I find a good painter and decorator?

Start with recommendations, check reviews and photos, and get two or three detailed quotes.

Do decorators need to be qualified?

No formal qualification is legally required, but many have NVQs or trade body memberships.

Should a decorator have insurance?

Yes. Public liability insurance protects you if something is damaged.

How much deposit should I pay a decorator?

For small jobs, often none. For larger jobs, a modest deposit for materials is reasonable.

How many quotes should I get?

Two or three is usually enough.
